Does water damage cork?

Where the myth comes from

Search for cork and water and you will find warnings about swelling, warping and mould. Read them closely and they are describing engineered cork flooring, where a thin cork wear layer sits on a fibreboard core. Water gets in through the seams, reaches that core and the adhesive, and the floor fails.

The cork is not what failed. A composite product's weakest layer failed, and the warning got attached to the material instead. It is repeated so widely that most cork suppliers repeat it about their own product.

What the material actually does

• Suberin makes the cell walls impermeable, so water does not travel into the material the way it does into wood.
• Cork does not rot. Wine stoppers, buoys and fishing floats spend decades in water, and that is the same material.
• It holds its shape under humidity rather than swelling and shrinking with the season.
• Suberin is antimicrobial, so mould grows on dirt left sitting on a surface, not on the cork.

So where can you use it

Bathrooms, bars, kitchens, humid rooms and anywhere that gets splashed. A wet bar top is not a compromise for cork, it is the condition cork handles best, and it grips harder as it gets wet.

The one care note, and it is about the glue

Wipe up standing water rather than leaving it to sit. That is for the sake of whatever the cork is fixed with, and for the finish, not for the cork.

Two other things do genuinely limit cork, and neither is water. Strong direct sun fades it unevenly over a few years, and it dents under a sharp point load such as a stiletto heel. Shallow dents recover on their own; deep ones do not.

Why we bother saying this

Because we were wrong about it ourselves until recently, and the correction came from the factory floor rather than from the internet. If you have been told cork and water do not mix, you were told something true about a floor and false about the material.

Does water damage cork?

No. Suberin seals cork's cell walls, so it does not rot or waterlog, and wine stoppers survive decades in liquid. What water damages is the adhesive, backing or finish a cork surface is attached to, not the cork.

Can cork be used in a bathroom?

Yes. Cork holds its shape in humidity and is naturally antimicrobial, so it suits bathrooms and other humid rooms. For wall panels the thing to get right is the adhesive specification and sealing the edges, which is an installation question rather than a material one.
