Its cell walls are about 53% suberin, which is hydrophobic, and its coefficient of friction rises as the surface gets damp, so the film that defeats a synthetic mat is the condition cork is best in.
Natural rubber is the closest competitor and is genuinely grippy dry and genuinely renewable, so sustainability is not the argument against it. Wet grip is.

Two honest trade-offs
- Cork is firmer than foam or TPE. Anyone expecting a soft, squishy surface will notice. That firmness is also stability, which is what a standing balance actually needs, but it is a real difference and worth knowing before you buy.
- A cork mat with a rubber base is heavier than a foam one. That is irrelevant to a studio storing mats on site and relevant to someone carrying one to class.
Cleaning matters more than people expect
Cork is naturally antimicrobial and antifungal, so it does not need a strong cleaner to stay hygienic. Strong cleaners are what harm it, because they attack the binder rather than the cork. Water and a drop of mild soap is the method.
This is the single most common way a bulk order goes wrong. A studio buys thirty mats, housekeeping cleans them with the strongest thing available, and the mats degrade.
