Is cork better than wood, acrylic or rubber for coasters?
Yes for most bar and cafe use, and the reason is narrow rather than general. A coaster spends its life under a cold glass in a ring of condensation, and cork is the one common coaster material whose grip improves when it is damp. Acrylic and stone get slippery instead. What cork gives up is that it dents under a sharp point load and fades in strong sun.
What actually decides it
A coaster has one job, which is to sit still under a wet glass and protect the surface underneath. So the useful comparison is not which material is nicest, it is which one behaves well when it gets wet, because that is the condition it lives in.
Cork's cell walls are about 53% suberin, which is hydrophobic, and its friction rises as the surface gets damp. Most alternatives do the reverse.
Where each one wins and loses
- Cork grips harder when wet, does not rot or waterlog, feels warm, is light, takes a logo three different ways, and is renewable. It dents under a point load, and strong sun fades it.
- Acrylic is waterproof and cheap to produce, and it wipes clean. It feels cold, it scratches, a wet glass slides on it, and it is plastic in a room where the buyer is often trying not to be.
- Wood looks warm and takes engraving well, but it needs sealing, and unsealed it stains and can warp with repeated wetting.
- Rubber and silicone grip well dry and are easy to clean, but grip falls away once a film of water sits between the glass and the surface.
- Stone and ceramic look premium and are genuinely waterproof. They are heavy, they feel cold, condensation pools rather than being absorbed, and a chipped edge can meet glassware.
When we would tell you not to use cork
If the coaster has to go through a dishwasher, or live outdoors in unshaded sun, cork is the wrong choice and we would say so. Hot detergent attacks the binder and the finish, and UV fades the surface unevenly.
Water is not on that list, and it is worth saying because most people expect it to be. For a bar top, a cafe table, a hotel room or a desk, the wet-grip behaviour is the whole argument and it is a real one.
The practical difference for a business
Cork takes branding three ways, engraved, screen printed or full colour, so a logo is a normal part of the order rather than a special process. It is also light, which matters more than it sounds when a hotel is shipping a few thousand of them.
