Is cork waterproof?
No. Cork is water resistant, not waterproof, and the difference matters. It shrugs off splashes, condensation and damp hands indefinitely. Prolonged standing water is a different thing, and it causes swelling, warping, staining and eventually mould.
Water resistant and waterproof are not the same claim
Cork's cell walls are about 53% suberin, which is hydrophobic, so water is repelled at the surface. That is what makes a cork coaster the right answer to a sweating glass, and it is why cork actually grips harder as it gets wet.
What suberin does not do is seal the piece against water that sits on it for hours or days. Cork is a closed-cell honeycomb, roughly 90% trapped gas by volume, and a surface that is left standing in water will eventually take some up. Once that happens it swells, it can warp, it stains, and mould becomes possible.
So: a wet bar top, yes. A shower floor or anything submerged, no.
The other two limits, stated plainly
- UV fades cork, and it fades unevenly. In strong sun this shows within a few years. Pigment and varnish slow it down, they do not stop it. We will not promise cork for an unshaded exterior.
- Cork dents under point loads. Heels, furniture legs and claws all mark it. Shallow dents recover on their own through the cell structure's memory. Deep ones are permanent.
- Sealed cork flooring needs re-sealing periodically. It is a maintenance item, not a one-off.
Where we would tell you not to use cork
- Anywhere permanently wet or submerged.
- Unshaded outdoors, if the colour matters to you.
- Heavy-traffic commercial floors where stiletto heels or heavy point loads are routine.
Where cork is genuinely the right choice
- Anywhere wet-handed or sweaty, which is where the grip is a real advantage rather than a talking point.
- Bar, cafe, hotel and restaurant tabletops, where a coaster meets condensation every day.
- Thermal and acoustic insulation. Cork's thermal conductivity is about 0.037 to 0.040 W/m·K, among the lowest of any natural material, because the closed cells stop air circulating.
- Desk and gifting pieces, where the warmth, the texture and how well it takes a logo are the point.
Why we publish this
Because a buyer who knows exactly where cork stops is a buyer who does not reject a shipment three months later. Most cork suppliers only publish what cork is good at. The limits are the more useful half, and they are harder to find.
